Looks like the tiny titans of tracking, AirTags, are having a moment. Another California driver woke up to an empty driveway, only to be reunited with their stolen car thanks to Apple’s little location miracle.

Philip Obando, the unfortunate BMW owner in question, tells NBC News he discovered his Bavarian beauty missing one morning. But fear not, for Obando was a man of precaution. A strategically placed AirTag (we don’t judge hiding spots here at Auto Theft Investigator) sang its location sweet song through the Find My app, leading Obando on a virtual trail of his stolen ride.

But this story gets even wilder. Turns out, Obando also had a dashcam – and that’s where things get interesting. The footage allegedly shows the thief swapping license plates, hitting the car wash for a quick scrub (talk about adding insult to injury), and even plotting the potential theft of another vehicle! On top of that, the forgetful crook even left his wallet behind in the stolen BMW – like, dude, come on.

Now, here’s the important part: Obando, with the power of the AirTag and dashcam evidence in hand, decided to track down the car himself. While we commend his initiative, NBC News and Auto Theft Investigator, both agree – confronting a potential car thief is a big NOPE. Contact the authorities, folks. Better yet, maybe call me. Let us handle the heat, while you enjoy the sweet satisfaction of getting your car back (and hopefully, the jerk’s wallet gets turned in too).

This whole incident is another win for the tiny tracker. AirTags are proving to be a valuable tool in the fight against car theft, and with a little extra detective work (courtesy of the dashcam), they can even provide bonus intel for the police or your Auto Theft PI. Just remember, stay safe, and leave the takedown to the professionals.

Oh… Check out the video below where my daughter hides an Airtag in my car. How long did it take me to find out I was being tracked?
